Pakistan’s petroleum dealers will see a significant boost to their earnings as the government lifts the margin on petrol and high‑speed diesel to Rs9.98 per litre, up from Rs8.64. The 15.5 % increase, approved by the federal cabinet, will take effect on 1 September and is expected to give fuel‑station operators a much-needed cushion in a market that has been marked by sharp price swings.
The new margin applies to all retail outlets that sell gasoline and high‑speed diesel, the two fuels that dominate the country’s transport sector. Under the previous arrangement, dealers could add only Rs8.64 to the wholesale price before passing the cost on to consumers. With the revised figure, the same wholesale price will translate into a higher retail markup, allowing stations to cover rising operating costs without immediately raising pump prices.
Industry analysts say the decision comes as part of a broader effort to shore up the domestic fuel supply chain amid persistent inflation and volatile global oil markets. By increasing dealer margins, the government hopes to incentivise more stations to maintain adequate inventories, reducing the risk of shortages that have plagued cities during peak travel periods.
For the average Pakistani, the change could mean a steadier supply of fuel and potentially more predictable prices at the pump. While the margin hike does not directly lower consumer prices, it is expected to ease the financial pressure on station owners, many of whom have struggled to keep up with rising logistics and maintenance costs.
The move also aligns with recent policy shifts aimed at stabilising the economy.
