The roar of crowds that once echoed through Islamabad’s Jinnah Sports Complex has been silent for more than two decades, as Pakistan’s athletes have travelled abroad for regional competitions. That silence is set to end when the nation welcomes its South Asian neighbours to a multi‑sport extravaganza in April 2027.
The Pakistan Sports Board confirmed on Friday that the country has officially secured the rights to host the 14th South Asian Games, marking the first time Pakistan will stage the event since the 2004 edition. The decision comes after a competitive bidding process in which the board highlighted recent improvements in infrastructure, government backing, and a renewed commitment to sport development.
Preparation work has already begun at key venues across the country. In Islamabad, the Jinnah Sports Complex is undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment that includes a new athletics track, upgraded seating capacity, and state‑of‑the‑art lighting. Lahore’s National Hockey Stadium and Karachi’s National Stadium are also slated for modernization, with an emphasis on meeting the standards set by the South Asian Olympic Council. These upgrades are expected to create a lasting legacy for local clubs and schools that will use the facilities long after the games conclude.
Beyond the physical upgrades, officials anticipate a boost to Pakistan’s tourism sector. The influx of athletes, officials, media personnel, and spectators is projected to generate significant revenue for hotels, transport services, and small businesses in host cities. Moreover, the event is being promoted as a catalyst for youth participation in sports, with school‑level programs already being launched to identify and nurture talent ahead of the competition.
The board’s chairman emphasized that the games will serve a diplomatic purpose as well, strengthening ties among South Asian nations through friendly rivalry and cultural exchange. By delivering a smoothly run, internationally recognised sporting event, Pakistan hopes to showcase its organisational capabilities on the regional stage and inspire a new generation of athletes to compete at the highest levels.
