Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has set a new benchmark for Pakistan’s maritime trade, handling 55.44 million tonnes of cargo in the 2026 fiscal year. The figure eclipses the previous high of 54.685 million tonnes recorded during the 2017‑2018 financial year, marking a significant milestone for the country’s busiest seaport.
The surge in throughput reflects sustained investment in port infrastructure and logistics. Over the past decade, KPT has upgraded its berths, expanded container handling capacity, and modernised cargo‑handling equipment. These improvements have attracted a growing share of both domestic and international shipping traffic, positioning Karachi as a pivotal hub for trade in South Asia.
Experts note that the record is not merely a statistical win; it signals the port’s enhanced competitiveness in a region where maritime routes are increasingly contested. With the China‑Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and other regional initiatives boosting trade flows, KPT’s ability to process larger volumes efficiently is a strategic advantage for Pakistan’s economy.
Looking ahead, KPT plans to further expand its facilities, including the development of a dedicated container terminal and the integration of digital tracking systems.
