Punjab’s new Star Rating App will give diners a clear, one‑click indicator of a restaurant’s hygiene and food quality.
The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has unveiled a mobile‑friendly platform that will grade eateries across the province on a five‑star scale, assessing factors such as cleanliness, food handling practices, ingredient sourcing and overall service standards. The initiative follows growing public demand for greater transparency in the food service sector, especially after a series of high‑profile food‑borne illness outbreaks that highlighted gaps in regulatory oversight.
Under the new system, trained inspectors will conduct on‑site audits and assign scores in four key categories: sanitation, food safety protocols, quality of ingredients, and customer experience. These scores will be aggregated into a single star rating that appears on the PFA’s app and website, allowing consumers to compare restaurants at a glance. Restaurants that achieve higher ratings will be eligible for promotional support from the authority, while those falling below a minimum threshold may face mandatory corrective actions or temporary suspension of licenses.
The rollout is slated for the first quarter of 2027, with a phased approach that will begin in major urban centers such as Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan before expanding to smaller towns. By providing an objective, publicly accessible benchmark, the PFA aims to boost consumer confidence, encourage establishments to adopt best practices, and ultimately elevate the overall standard of food safety across Punjab.
