GUGO Motors has teamed up with China’s Shengtang Group to launch domestic production of electric buses.
The memorandum of understanding was signed on 14 October 2026 in Islamabad, during a ceremony organized by the Pakistan‑China Business Forum to commemorate the 77th anniversary of bilateral trade ties. The agreement brings together GUGO, a home‑grown automotive player, and Shengtang, a leading Chinese manufacturer of electric commercial vehicles, to explore the feasibility of assembling fully electric buses on Pakistani soil.
Under the MoU, the partners will conduct a joint feasibility study and, pending positive results, establish a production line that will assemble complete electric buses locally. By shifting assembly from import‑dependent supply chains to a domestic facility, the venture aims to cut the cost of electric public transport, reduce reliance on foreign‑made units, and accelerate the rollout of clean‑energy buses across major cities such as Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.
Stakeholders highlighted the potential for substantial job creation, especially in engineering, tooling and after‑sales services, as well as a transfer of advanced battery‑management and propulsion technologies to Pakistani firms. The project dovetails with the federal government’s Green Transport Initiative, which offers incentives for electric vehicle adoption and seeks to lower the transport sector’s share of national carbon emissions.
If the feasibility phase confirms commercial viability, production could commence by 2028, positioning Pakistan as one of the few South Asian nations with a home‑grown electric bus industry. The collaboration not only strengthens the strategic economic partnership with China but also signals a decisive move toward a more sustainable, locally‑sourced mobility ecosystem.
