Shafqat Ali Khan has been named Pakistan’s inaugural ambassador to Armenia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on 13 September that the veteran diplomat will set up a resident Pakistani embassy in Yerevan, marking the first time Islamabad will maintain a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Caucasus state. Historically, Pakistan’s engagement with Armenia has been limited to non‑resident representation, with diplomatic affairs handled from Islamabad and, at times, through the embassy in Tehran. The new appointment reflects a broader shift in Islamabad’s foreign policy, which seeks to diversify partnerships beyond traditional allies and deepen ties with emerging markets in the region. By establishing a physical presence, Pakistan aims to open direct channels for trade, cultural exchange, and tourism—sectors that have remained under‑explored despite mutual interest.
