Pakistan’s fields stretch from the rugged foothills of the north to the fertile plains of the south, producing more than 115 million tonnes of crops each year. Yet a large share of the harvest ends up as discarded stalks, husks and other residues that burn in open fields, contributing to air pollution and squandering a potential energy source.

Now, that waste will be harnessed for power. A joint venture led by Northumbria University is set to commission Pakistan’s inaugural full‑scale crop‑waste‑to‑energy plant, backed by a £1.25 million grant from the United Kingdom’s government. The facility, slated for completion by early 2027, will process agricultural residues into clean electricity, marking a pivotal shift toward renewable energy in the country.

The plant will employ anaerobic digestion and gasification technologies to convert lignocellulosic material into biogas, which will then drive turbines to generate up to 10 MW of electricity—enough to supply roughly 15,000 homes. By diverting waste from open burning, the project also aims to cut greenhouse‑gas emissions and improve air quality in surrounding rural communities.

For Pakistani farmers, the initiative promises a new revenue stream. Under the plant’s feedstock‑collection scheme, growers will receive modest payments for delivering crop residues, incentivising better waste management practices and reducing post‑harvest losses. The scheme aligns with the government’s broader “Green Belt” program, which seeks to integrate sustainable agriculture with energy security.

Beyond immediate benefits, the collaboration with a UK university introduces advanced research and capacity‑building opportunities for local engineers and scientists. Training modules on bioenergy conversion are already being rolled out at partner institutions, laying the groundwork for a domestic industry that could replicate the model across other provinces. If successful, the project could serve as a blueprint for scaling renewable energy solutions throughout South Asia’s agrarian economies.
